SOLUTIONS. POWER QUALITY


Power Quality is an important concern for any facility. Bay's exciting new product, the WaveSync controller is designed to provide three phase AC motors with ride through protection against momentary power interruptions and sags. This product provides significant cost savings by reducing process and production interruptions caused by power quality issues. A recent project implementing WaveSync controls has shown the utility of this product.

A manufacturing company wanted to reduce the number of production interruptions caused by power quality problems.

Bay's Solution
With its long history of providing products and services for large scale facility operations, Bay has a strong understanding of electric motors and the negative effects that power interruptions can have on production. Restarting a production line after a power interruption can take several minutes, even hours. The result is scrap and increased costs.

To help provide an answer for these issues, Bay developed the WaveSync Ride Through Controller for momentary power interruptions and sags lasting three seconds or less, the WaveSync has the ability to allow three phase AC motors to negotiate power quality events, keeping the protected equipment operating. For this customer's application, the WaveSync was the perfect solution.

Project Scope
Bay installed the WaveSync Ride Through Controller on a key production asset, a 150 HP rotary screw air compressor. This involved retrofitting the WaveSync into the existing motor controls. With the WaveSync's built-in learn mode, installation and start-up was easy.

Results
The WaveSync Ride Through Controller has ended the periodic shutdown of the air compressor due to power quality events. Since installation, the WaveSync has successfully negotiated five events that in the past would have shut down plant operations. This project included all engineering, labor, and training for a turnkey installation. The WaveSync motor controller installation paid for itself within 3 months. The success of this project demonstrates the effectiveness of the WaveSync product as a power quality solution.
